Carbon Offset FAQs
How much carbon dioxide (CO2)
does a passenger vehicle emit?
When an engine
burns one gallon of gas it creates 20 pounds of
carbon dioxide through the exhaust. On average
American motorists emit
between 10,000 and 12,000 pounds of carbon dioxide every
year. That's almost 6 tons of emissions on average.
What does it mean to offset the carbon
dioxide emitted by my car?
It means you know how much carbon
dioxide you emit and you pay to sponsor greenhouse gas
emission reduction projects to counterbalance your own
emissions.
Why should I
offset my emissions?
Carbon offsets are an important part
of what you can do to help mitigate global warming.
The other parts are conserving gas, driving more
efficiency, supporting clean technology, and using
the political system to take action.
How much of the cost of a carbon offset
goes into a clean energy project?
We don't know of one clean-tech company that
discloses their costs. However, it is relatively easy to put
a value on carbon which are measured in dollars per ton. Our
Large Carbon Offset membership reduces 12,000 pounds or 5.4
tons of CO2
emissions.
Is Shift Green able to verify that
the carbon offsets actually happen?
Yes. Our viability depends on transparency with how we use
funds to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for our members. We
submit our own records to an independent auditing firm to ensure sales meet supply of
carbon offsets sold. Please read our
verification page for more details about our 2007 annual
report.
Is Shift Green tax deductible?
Shift Green is tax deductible as a business expense, but not
deductible for individuals.
Why does Shift Green
make a profit?
We are your high-quality carbon offset broker. We
competitively price each pound of emission we reduce and
we provide
excellent incentives to offset your carbon footprint. We believe making a modest profit
helping the planet is better than making a profit
from hurting it.
